Christmas Eve is eight days out and we need your help. So do the more than 1,000 local families counting on assistance from The Empty Stocking Fund to help put gifts under the tree and food on the table this Christmas.

Perhaps it is the weather, unseasonably warm and not conducive to putting one into the Christmas spirit. Shorts and bare feet and temperatures in the 70s in the weeks before Christmas do not bring to mind the suffering and needs of others this time of year as much as a cold arctic blast to the face that makes even the walk from the front door to the car a miserable trip.

Those mornings, when no number of layers of clothing keeps you warm, the nights where heaters run nearly non stop as Christmas plans are made, those remind of us how good we have it and how mightily others struggle, most often through no fault of their own.

The forecast says a cold snap is due Bay County this weekend. Those who have nurtured, cajoled and sweated over the Empty Stocking Fund for decades, who know that meeting the goal is imperative to so many peoples Christmas, believe we are all due for a wakeup call today.

We ask this of a community that has, over and over and over again, shown its compassion: Take a moment today as the high hovers in the mid 70s to remember the Empty Stocking Fund, the 30 plus year partnership between The News Herald and Bill Cramer Chevrolet to help the Salvation Army help our fellow BayTake a minute to count our blessings,

to think about what we have versus what we might have lost and versus what so many others might not ever see.

Reflect on Christmases past, the gifts we been given both by God and our friends and family, and how many people there are out there who would trade places with us. We should think about the Christmas just over a week away, our plans with family, what we have bought for others and perhaps what we hope to receive.

And in that time we should think about the misfortune of so many others, who don have the means we been given whether life dealt them a setback or was just plain cruel. We should think about the children, the ones caught in the crossfire of the havoc we adults can wreak, and that some of them, without the Empty Stocking Fund, will not wake up to presents under the tree Christmas Day.

God has been good to many in Bay County, and we know it and we always shown it. Whether it was helping Katrina victims, people facing overwhelming odds or raising nearly $4 million with the Empty Stocking Fund over 30 years while never failing to meet the annual goal this community has always risen to the occasion.

Let try, today, to show that our hearts are as warm as the weather and bring the Empty Stocking Fund home with a bang.
